Nobel Prize for Peace, Not Deals

by admin477351

In a pointed message about its core values, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to an advocate for democratic rights, not a maker of diplomatic deals. The selection of María Corina Machado over Donald Trump emphasizes that the committee sees peace as more than just the absence of conflict.

Machado was honored for her “struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.” Her work is aimed at creating the underlying conditions for lasting peace: justice, human rights, and representative government.

Donald Trump’s candidacy, in contrast, was built upon a series of specific agreements, most notably a recent Gaza ceasefire plan. These are significant achievements in conflict management, but they do not necessarily address the root causes of injustice that often lead to war.

The White House statement following the decision reinforced this deal-focused perspective, vowing that Trump would “continue making peace deals.” The language suggests a view of peace as a series of transactions to be completed.

The 2025 prize is a clear statement that the committee’s definition of “peace” is broad and aspirational. It is not merely a deal to stop fighting, but the creation of a society where people can live in freedom and dignity.
