Russia has ramped up its offensive on Ukraine’s railway infrastructure, resulting in the deaths of six railway workers after a ballistic missile hit a locomotive depot. This attack is part of a broader Russian campaign targeting critical infrastructure in Kyiv and its surrounding areas. The recent wave of strikes has killed at least 12 individuals, including children, and wounded several others, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict.
The railway system in Ukraine has been vital, facilitating the movement of civilians, supplies, and military equipment throughout the war. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion, 58 railway workers have lost their lives, and over 300 have been injured. Ukraine’s railway network, spanning approximately 24,000 kilometers, is a crucial component of the nation’s economy and war logistics. Ukrainian officials have expressed concerns that continued strikes could further impact industrial activities, exports, and the movement of people and goods. In response, Ukraine is urging its Western allies to provide more air-defense systems to safeguard the railway infrastructure from Russian missiles and drones.
The increased frequency of Russian drone strikes has added pressure on Ukraine to protect its railway system. Over 1,500 drones have reportedly been used in recent attacks, including newer, more challenging-to-intercept jet-powered models.
