Migraines can be far more controllable than most people realize. While the condition has a genetic component, a significant proportion of migraine episodes are triggered by factors within an individual’s control. With the right knowledge and habits, many migraine sufferers can reduce their attacks substantially.

A migraine is not simply a bad headache. It involves severe, often one-sided throbbing pain and typically comes with a range of debilitating symptoms including nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to both light and sound. Episodes can last anywhere from a few hours to several days.

Recognizing triggers is a critical starting point. These include irregular mealtimes, inadequate or disturbed sleep, chronic stress, nighttime screen exposure, prolonged sun exposure, travel-related fatigue, menstrual cycle changes, high intake of processed food, and specific foods like cheese and chocolate. Once triggers are identified, they can often be managed or avoided.

On the dietary front, eating at regular times, maintaining good hydration, following a high-protein diet, and limiting saturated fats, sugar, and caffeine are all advised. Pumpkin seeds in the morning, whole fruits instead of juices, and coconut water as a caffeine substitute are easy-to-adopt habits that may help. Alcohol and sweetened energy drinks should be eliminated.

Exercise should not be overlooked in a migraine prevention plan. Activities such as walking, dancing, swimming, jogging, or yoga can help regulate the nervous system and lower stress. Certain red flags like sudden onset of severe headache, visual disturbances, neck stiffness, fever with headache, or difficulties with balance require immediate medical evaluation.
