by admin477351

Bulgaria has raised alarms over escalating security risks in the Black Sea, attributed to Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine, following recent drone attacks on commercial vessels within its exclusive economic zone. Bulgarian President Iliana Yotova highlighted these concerns after a meeting of the Consultative Council on National Security on October 7, emphasizing threats to maritime security, navigation freedom, and critical infrastructure protection.

The incidents on October 6 involved attacks that reportedly sank one ship, resulting in the crew’s loss, while another vessel sustained severe damage, though its crew was rescued. The Bulgarian authorities noted an increase in the use of sea and air drones, which poses significant dangers to commercial shipping and essential infrastructure.

In response, the council resolved to enhance maritime surveillance, bolster the protection of strategic locations, and expand Bulgaria’s capabilities to counter drone threats. It also underscored the importance of maintaining high readiness levels for maritime search and rescue operations.

Bulgaria aims to collaborate with NATO and the European Union to strengthen air and maritime surveillance and improve coastal security. Additionally, Sofia plans to consult with Romania and Türkiye on strategies to safeguard merchant shipping in the Black Sea region.

President Yotova stressed the need for Bulgaria to back diplomatic initiatives aimed at ensuring safer navigation in the Black Sea and fostering cooperation among the region’s coastal nations. She also advocated for international investigations into the attacks on commercial vessels and called for greater involvement from European and global maritime institutions.
