Netflix’s latest thriller, The Whisper Man, delves into the chilling world of serial killers through the story of a father and son entangled in a perilous investigation following a child’s disappearance. The film features Adam Scott as Tom Kennedy, a crime novelist and widower, who returns to his hometown with his young son, Jake. Their arrival is overshadowed by a spate of child disappearances eerily similar to the methods of a notorious serial killer currently behind bars.
Adding depth to the narrative, Robert De Niro portrays Pete, a retired detective and Tom’s estranged father. Pete’s past comes back to haunt him when Jake vanishes, forcing him to face unresolved issues. The investigation is joined by Detective Amanda, played by Michelle Monaghan, as the trio works to unravel the mystery. The film, adapted from Alex North’s 2019 novel, weaves together elements typical of thriller genres, including missing children, serial murderers, cryptic clues, and psychological tension.
Despite its promising premise, The Whisper Man struggles to deliver the suspense it aims for, with a storyline that tends to be predictable and twists that feel conventional. While De Niro offers a subdued performance that seems somewhat detached, Scott finds it challenging to convincingly portray Tom’s emotional struggles. The film’s brooding visual style and inconsistent pacing further detract from its potential impact.
As the narrative builds towards its climax, the final act attempts to heighten tension through a series of confrontations and reveals. However, these efforts fall short of creating genuine excitement, and the conclusion lacks a rewarding payoff.
