This summer, Europe experienced a succession of intense heatwaves that resulted in at least 35,000 excess deaths, with experts suggesting that the true number could be much higher as more comprehensive assessments are completed. The brunt of this mortality was felt in Germany, France, and Spain, which together reported over 25,000 excess deaths linked to the extreme heat. Germany alone recorded approximately 14,000 heat-related fatalities from April to early August, marking a grim milestone as the deadliest summer since records began. Spain’s toll was nearly 5,000 heat-attributed deaths since May, also setting a new record for the country.
In France, about 7,300 excess deaths were reported between late May and July, although this preliminary figure excludes August and is subject to updates. Other European nations, including the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland, also documented significant increases in mortality during the heatwaves. The recurring high temperatures, which soared above 40°C in many parts of western and central Europe, shattered numerous national and local temperature records, underscoring the growing impact of climate change on the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events.
Identifying heat-related deaths poses a challenge, as extreme temperatures often exacerbate existing cardiovascular, respiratory, and other health conditions, rather than being directly noted as the cause of death. This complexity can lead to an underestimation of the true toll of such heatwaves. As data from August and other delayed mortality reports are compiled, experts anticipate the overall death count across Europe to increase further.
