Heathrow Airport has ceded its title as Europe’s busiest airport to Istanbul Airport, which recorded higher passenger numbers in July. The Turkish airport handled 8.15 million travelers, surpassing Heathrow’s 7.86 million. While Heathrow experienced a 1.5% decrease in passengers compared to July of the previous year, Istanbul Airport saw a 2.3% increase, highlighting a shift in air traffic dynamics within Europe.
The decline in Heathrow’s figures has been partly attributed to disruptions caused by ongoing conflict in the Middle East. This change has intensified calls for the UK government to give the green light to Heathrow’s proposed third runway. Currently, the airport operates with two runways that are nearly at full capacity. The planned expansion, estimated at £33 billion, aims to elevate its annual capacity to approximately 150 million passengers, enhancing the UK’s global connectivity, trade, and tourism.
Istanbul Airport, which commenced operations in 2018, benefits from a larger site and operates continuously. It currently utilizes three runways, with a fourth expected to be operational by the end of 2026. This infrastructure advantage has allowed it to accommodate the increasing number of passengers, solidifying its position as a major hub in Europe.
In the UK, other airports have experienced record-breaking months. London Stansted and Manchester airports reported their busiest July ever, with 3.1 million and 3.4 million passengers respectively. This trend indicates a strong demand for air travel within the region, despite the challenges faced by Heathrow.
