Iran Diplomacy Eases Oil Supply Fears, Prices Fall 1%

by admin477351

Global oil prices experienced a decline of about 1% on Tuesday, driven by renewed diplomatic engagement involving Iran that raised hopes of easing tensions in the Middle East and alleviating potential disruptions to energy supplies. Despite this drop, ongoing regional conflicts and concerns over shipping routes continued to keep prices elevated.

Brent crude futures decreased by $1, or 0.86%, to settle at $114.81 per barrel, while the US West Texas Intermediate crude saw a reduction of 88 cents, or 0.86%, closing at $100.88 per barrel. Both benchmarks had previously dropped by approximately 1% earlier in the trading session.

Efforts to de-escalate regional tensions gained momentum as Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Pakistan engaged in discussions with Iranian officials in Tehran on Monday. These talks aimed at fostering cooperation on peace and security encouraged some investors to take profits after oil prices had surged to multi-month highs.

However, the prospects for lasting peace remain uncertain following renewed attacks by Iran-aligned Houthi forces on Saudi Arabia. The conflict has also intensified risks to commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway that previously accounted for about one-fifth of global energy supplies before the onset of the conflict in February.

While diplomatic efforts offer some optimism, supply pressures continue to pose challenges for the oil market. Gulf crude exports have been on a four-week decline, and oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz have diminished to roughly 60% of their usual levels. Additionally, global distillate inventories are nearly 5% below their five-year average, indicating further strain on supply.

Although progress in diplomacy could potentially ease some supply concerns, persistent geopolitical tensions and ongoing disruptions to energy transportation continue to threaten the stability of the market.
