Brussels Airlines Eliminates Free Cabin Bags for Lowest Fare Passengers

by admin477351

Brussels Airlines is reshaping its fare structure by eliminating free overhead cabin baggage from its most economical ticket option on short and medium-haul flights. Currently, passengers traveling with an Economy Light fare can carry both a personal item and a standard cabin bag. However, with the introduction of the Economy Basic fare, travelers will be restricted to only a small personal item that fits under the seat, such as a handbag, laptop bag, or small backpack.

For those who wish to bring a larger carry-on suitcase, they will need to either select a higher fare category or pay an added fee. This new fare option will undergo a trial phase starting April 28 for flights from May 19 on select routes, with the potential for a broader implementation across Brussels Airlines’ European network if the test proves successful.

The adjustment is part of a comprehensive strategy within the Lufthansa Group, which encompasses Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Discover Airlines, Lufthansa City Airlines, and Air Dolomiti. The airlines assert that this change offers added flexibility, allowing passengers traveling light to benefit from lower prices. Conversely, passengers who frequently carry cabin luggage might find the overall costs relatively unchanged once additional baggage fees are considered.

The change is likely to significantly affect business travelers, frequent flyers, expatriates, and families who often depend on cabin baggage to circumvent checked luggage fees and minimize airport wait times. Travelers are encouraged to thoroughly review fare conditions prior to booking and to consider the total travel cost, including potential baggage fees, rather than focusing solely on the advertised ticket price.

For those traveling with only a personal item, the new fare could result in savings. However, for many others, the least expensive ticket may no longer equate to the lowest overall travel cost.
