US President Donald Trump has expressed confidence in Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s position following a tightly contested election, with partial results showing an uncertain path to forming a stable government. Speaking about Netanyahu, whom he referred to as “Bibi,” Trump asserted that his endorsement significantly influenced the election, transforming it from a potential defeat into a competitive race.
With approximately 93% of the votes counted, Netanyahu’s political bloc was projected to secure 53 seats, while the opposition alliance led by Gadi Eisenkot was expected to obtain 48 seats. Arab parties were anticipated to win 19 seats, leaving none of the blocs with the 61 seats needed for a parliamentary majority. Around 500,000 ballots remain to be counted, including those from soldiers, diplomats, prisoners, and voters outside their designated polling areas, which could impact the final seat distribution.
Trump highlighted that his public support for Netanyahu had boosted the prime minister’s electoral prospects after initial concerns about his chances. While Trump has not decided on involvement in efforts to form Israel’s next government, his endorsement was intended to rally Israeli voters behind Netanyahu.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog is expected to consult with political parties before granting a mandate to form the next government. He has urged leaders to avoid another election. Netanyahu is likely to pursue a right-wing coalition, while Eisenkot may consider partnerships involving Arab parties, though both strategies face challenges in securing parliamentary support.
If neither side manages to form a government, Israel could face another election as early as April, with Netanyahu potentially continuing as caretaker prime minister during ongoing negotiations. The final election results and subsequent coalition talks will determine whether Israel can establish a stable government or enter another phase of political uncertainty.
